Friends of the Earth India is pleased to release our new publication: Ecological Critique of the
Budget
The Union Budget is often viewed as a technical financial exercise. However, as this publication highlights, it is also a deeply political and ecological document that shapes development pathways, determines environmental outcomes, and influences the lives and livelihoods of millions. Budgetary allocations are not neutral choices; they reflect priorities about what is valued, whose interests are protected, and who bears the ecological costs of development. This publication brings together critical reflections on budgetary priorities and public expenditure, linking them to questions of climate vulnerability, environmental protection, and ecological justice. Released as part of Friends of the Earth India’s ongoing work to foreground ecological justice, democratic governance, and people-centred development, this work aims to contribute to informed discussions among parliamentarians, political leaders, and the wider civil society, helping to place ecological concerns at the centre of policy debates and legislative processes.
Examining the Budget from an Ecological Perspective
At a time when climate crises, environmental degradation, and social inequalities are deepening, examining the Union Budget from an ecological perspective is one of the important interventions we are committed to. This publication represents our continued effort to critically analyze how public resources are allocated and what these choices mean for our environment and communities.
